Highlands Set for National Television

The Fort Thomas Highlands-Cincinnati Saint Xavier game, scheduled for Friday, September 25 at 7:30PM will be televised nationally on the CBS College Sports Network (CSTV). This will be the first nationally-televised game in the storied history of Highlands football. The contest will be played at Highlands.

Highlands Continues Dominance Over Northern Kentucky Competition

2009 Week Two: Highlands 37 Ryle 14

The Fort Thomas Highlands Bluebirds defeated Kentucky Class 6A Ryle to move to 2-0 on the season. Quarterback Will Bardo completed 6 of 12 passes for 154 yards passing; he also rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown. Running back Austin Collinsworth led the ground attack with 124 yards rushing on 13 carries. He scored 4 touchdowns in the contest. Kicker Adam Weinel connected on a 31-yard field goal to round out the scoring for Highlands. On defense, linebacker Colin Rosenhagen and defensive back David Hogue each made an interception, and defensive lineman Brian Beck recovered a fumble. Both Highlands and Ryle entered the game with 1-0 varsity records.

The Highlands JV team hosted the Ryle JV team at Highlands for the first JV game of the 2009 season; the Highlands JV team won 37-21. The Highlands freshman squad lost to the Louisville Saint Xavier freshman squad 27-26 in the freshman team's opening game. The Highlands freshman team attempted a game-winning 2-point conversion late in the contest, which was unsuccessful.

Highlands Tops First AP Poll

The first Associated Press (AP) Kentucky football polls have been released, and Fort Thomas Highlands is ranked first in Class 5A. Highlands received 12 of the 13 first place votes. The Bluebirds face Kentucky Class 6A Ryle this Friday, August 28.

Highlands Wins 2009 Season Opener

2009 Week One: Highlands 19 Louisville Manual 8

Defending Kentucky Class 5A champion Fort Thomas Highlands traveled to Louisville and defeated Class 6A Louisville DuPont Manual 19-8 in the first week of football action. On offense, running back Austin Collinsworth amassed 66 yards rushing on 14 carries. Collinsworth scored Highlands' first 2 touchdowns of the game, giving the 'Birds a 13-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Highlands extended the lead to 19-0 after running back Tyler Fennell ran for a score. The touchdown run was set up by a 48-yard pass from quarterback Will Bardo (who was starting his first varsity game for the Bluebirds) to wide receiver Nick Buten. Manual scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the score 19-8 in Highlands' favor; the Bluebirds' defense did not give up any more points in the contest. Highlands outgained Manual in total yardage by a count of 247 yards to 209 yards.

The Highlands junior varsity (JV) and freshman teams do not begin their seasons until next week.

More Preseason News

The Kentucky Enquirer's northern Kentucky football coaches poll has ranked Fort Thomas Highlands first in its 2009 preseason football poll. The Kentucky Enquirer has also listed Tyler Grubbs, Austin Collinsworth and Brandon Roller as northern Kentucky "seniors to watch" this year.

The Louisville Courier-Journal's coaches poll has ranked Highlands first in Kentucky Class 5A heading into the regular season. The Louisville Courier-Journal's Jody Demling has named Brandon Roller and Austin Collinsworth in his list of the 25 best seniors in Kentucky, and Austin Collinsworth has been named the "top college prospect" in Class 5A.

Both BluegrassPreps and BluegrassRivals have ranked Highlands first in their Kentucky Class 5A preseason polls.

In addition, MaxPreps has Highlands ranked 18th nationally in its final 2009 preseason poll. No Kentucky team is ranked higher than Highlands in this national ranking.

Highlands Favored in Statewide Preview

The Lexington Herald-Leader ranked Fort Thomas Highlands first in its Kentucky Class 5A preseason football rankings. In addition, Austin Collinsworth was named one of Kentucky's "fab five" football players heading into the 2009 season. Highlands seniors Brandon Roller (TE/LB) and Austin Collinsworth (RB/DB) were also listed as two of the state's top 50 football players.

Highlands Defeats Male in Preseason Scrimmage Action

2009 Preseason Scrimmage: Highlands 50 Louisville Male 40

Fort Thomas Highlands defeated Kentucky Class 6A power Louisville Male in the Bluebirds' only 2009 preseason scrimmage. The scrimmage was played in a game format. Highlands got out to a 43-14 halftime advantage and was leading the Male Bulldogs 50-14 in the fourth quarter, before Male narrowed the margin late in the game, against mostly Highlands' back-up players. Austin Collinsworth and Tyler Fennell carried the ball well for the 'Birds, and quarterback Will Bardo played with poise and composure; he threw the ball with great accuracy in the scrimmage. The defense, led by linebacker Brandon Roller, was solid against Male's speed. This scrimmage was played as part of the 2009 Tom Potter Classic.

Highlands to Participate in the Tom Potter Classic

Fort Thomas Highlands is scheduled to participate in the 2009 Tom Potter Classic, a series of preseason scrimmages organized by the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association (NKFCA). The 2009 Tom Potter Classic will involve 14 scrimmages held over a two-week period of time, prior to the start of the 2009 football season in Kentucky. As a part of this event, Highlands will host Kentucky Class 6A Louisville Male on Friday, August 14 at 7:00PM. The event is named in honor of the late Tom Potter, who was an assistant football coach at Newport Central Catholic in addition to executive director of the NKFCA.
