Highlands Wraps Up District Play

2009 Week Ten: Highlands 67 Scott 20
Date/Time: Friday, October 23 at 7:00PM
Location: Highlands

Fort Thomas Highlands completed district play for the 2009 regular season, easily handling Scott 67-20 to move to 9-0 on the year. Senior Will Bardo, who was injured in the Cincinnati Saint Xavier game, returned to action as a return specialist and running back. He accounted for 71 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, to go along with a 50-yard kick return. Running back Jordan Streeter amassed 73 yards and running back Tyler Fennell rushed for 53 yards in the contest. With Highlands up big early in the game, several Highlands JV players saw considerable action; running back Jake True led all Bluebirds with 85 yards on the ground. Quarterback Patrick Towles completed 7 of his 12 passing attempts for 93 yards and a touchdown pass. He also had a rushing touchdown in the game.

Also, the Highlands JV team defeated the Scott County JV team 38-14. The game was played at Highlands on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00AM. The Highlands freshman team won a first-round northern Kentucky freshman large-school playoff game, defeating the Simon Kenton freshman team 30-20. This playoff game was played on Thursday, October 22 at 6:00PM, and was played at Highlands. The Highlands freshman team will play the Covington Catholic freshman team for the 2009 northern Kentucky freshman large-school championship. This game will be held at Highlands on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00PM.

Collinsworth Honored by MaxPreps

Highlands senior running back Austin Collinsworth was named the National Player of the Week by MaxPreps. He was honored with this distinction following his performance against rival Covington Catholic this past weekend. In that contest, Collinsworth amassed 229 net rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 carries, despite playing with a hand injury. Fort Thomas Highlands is currently ranked 8th nationally in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, a computerized ranking system.

Highlands Runs Over Rival

2009 Week Nine: Highlands 36 Covington Catholic 7

Location: Covington Catholic

Fresh off their bye week, Fort Thomas Highlands traveled to archrival Covington Catholic and handed the Colonels their first district loss of the season. Overcoming some early turnovers, the Highlands running game got in gear, as running back Austin Collinsworth amassed 229 rushing yards in the game, a career best for him. Collinsworth scored 2 touchdowns and running back Tyler Fennell punched in 2 scores on the ground, with touchdowns of 2 yards and 13 yards. Running back Jordan Streeter rushed for 77 yards in the contest. Quarterback Patrick Towles, in his second varsity start, passed for 142 yards in addition to scoring on a 31-yard run. Wide receiver John Drennen caught 4 passes for 91 yards.

Highlands' defense did not surrender a point in the game, as Covington Catholic's only score came as a result of a fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown in the first quarter. Covington Catholic only had 71 yards of offense in the game, while Highlands had 478 yards of offense in the contest.

In addition, the Highlands JV squad defeated the Covington Catholic JV squad 20-14. The game was played at Highlands on Monday, October 19 at 7:00PM. The Highlands freshman team defeated the Dixie Heights freshman team 46-14. This game, played at Dixie Heights on Thursday, October 15 at 6:00PM, was the final game of the freshman regular season. The Highlands freshman team enters the two-round northern Kentucky large-school freshman playoffs next week as the top-seeded team in the east bracket.

Bye Week

2009 Week Eight: Bye Week

The Fort Thomas Highlands varsity football team did not have a game during week eight, as it was a bye week for the Bluebirds. The 'Birds entered week eight undefeated and ranked 4th nationally in the CalPreps National Football Power Ratings, and 9th nationally in the USA Today Super 25.

The Highlands JV team defeated the Beechwood JV team 37-23 on Saturday, October 10. The game was played at 10:00AM at Beechwood. Also, the Highlands freshman squad defeated the Simon Kenton freshman squad 42-0. The game was played on Wednesday, October 7 at 5:00PM; it was held at Highlands.

Highlands Blasts District Opponent

2009 Week Seven: Highlands 52 Dixie Heights 9
Date/Time: Friday, October 2 at 7:00PM
Location: Highlands

Undefeated Fort Thomas Highlands opened district play against the Dixie Heights Colonels, defeating the visiting team 52-9. Running back Austin Collinsworth rushed for 3 touchdowns, while sophomore quarterback Patrick Towles completed 11 of his 19 passing attempts and threw 3 touchdown passes in his first varsity football start. Towles started in place of quarterback Will Bardo, who was injured in last week's win over Cincinnati Saint Xavier. Wide receivers Nick Buten and John Drennen each caught a touchdown pass in the contest, and running back Jordan Streeter scored both a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in the game. Kicker Adam Weinel connected on a 21-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.

Earlier in the week Highlands broke into the USA Today Super 25 national rankings; the Bluebirds entered the list ranked 23rd. The USA Today Super 25 is arguably the most prestigious national ranking list.

In addition, the Highlands JV squad lost to the Dixie Heights JV squad 36-28. The game was played at Dixie Heights on Saturday, October 3 at 10:00AM. The Bluebirds JV team entered the game undefeated on the season. The Highlands freshman team defeated the Conner freshman team 36-6. The game was played at Highlands on Thursday, October 1 at 6:00PM.
