Highlands Begins District Play with a Victory

Fort Thomas Highlands defeated district rival Dixie Heights 42-14 to begin district play this year. Quarterback Patrick Towles completed seven of 16 passes for 140 yards and two passing touchdowns, along with a rushing score. Towles' favorite receiver in the contest was wide receiver Daniel Gold, who hauled in three passes for 98 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Gold also returned a Dixie kick 88 yards for a score in the game; Gold finished with 215 all-purpose yards against the Colonels. On the ground, running back Jordan Streeter led all 'Birds with 70 rushing yards. Running back Corey Compton added 35 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. On defense, defensive back Ty Seidl picked off a Dixie pass and returned it 56 yards for the score. He also recovered a fumble.

With the win, Highlands' win streak stands at 35 games.

Also, the Highlands junior varsity (JV) team defeated the Dixie Heights JV team 69-6 on Saturday, October 2 at 10:00AM to stay perfect on the season; the game was played at Highlands. The Highlands freshman squad shut out the Dixie Heights freshman team 53-0 on Thursday, September 30 at 6:00PM, played at Highlands.

Highlands Keeps Rolling Over the Competition

Fort Thomas Highlands pitched its second straight shut-out, defeating Class 6A Louisville Eastern 46-0 to remain perfect for the 2010 season. Class 5A Highlands saw all of its running backs healthy and able to play for the first time in several weeks, as Corey Compton, Jordan Streeter, Jake True and Colin Seidl saw significant action against Eastern, who entered the game with a 3-1 record. Compton racked up 44 rushing yards on 13 carries, while Streeter scored two rushing touchdowns and both True and Seidl registered one apiece. Quarterback Patrick Towles completed eight of 17 passing attempts for 257 yards; he also threw for one touchdown, a 67-yard pass to wide receiver Daniel Gold, and converted a two-point attempt. Kicker Adam Weinel made a 27-yard field goal to open up the scoring in the first quarter. Highlands' defense continued to play very well, holding Eastern's star running back Jon Davis, who has already committed to the University of Kentucky, to only 37 yards on the ground. Defensive back Drake Bruns intercepted an Eastern pass and returned it 50 yards for a Bluebirds score. Defensive back Quentin Murray also registered an interception. Linebacker Ethan Bishop also had a big game for Highlands, making several key tackles and blocking an Eastern punt.

The win extends Highlands' current win streak to 34 games.

Also, the Highlands freshman team defeated the Conner freshman squad 46-6 on Thursday, September 23 at 6:00PM. The game was played at Conner. The Highlands junior varsity (JV) team had a bye week.

'Birds Fly Past Boone County

Class 5A Fort Thomas Highlands hit the road for the first time in 2010 and handled Class 6A Boone County 55-0. Highlands jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead in the first quarter after running back Corey Compton, who returned to action after suffering a concussion earlier in the season, scored a nine-yard rushing touchdown, followed by a pair of rushing touchdowns by quarterback Patrick Towles. Highlands, ranked first in the current Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, then worked on developing depth at the running back position as sophomore Colin Seidl played significant minutes, scoring three rushing touchdowns and catching one touchdown pass to blow the game wide open. Seidl finished the game with 76 yards on eight carries and two receptions for 50 receiving yards. Back-up quarterback Donovan McCoy scored a touchdown from one yard out to round out the scoring for Highlands.

Highlands' current win streak now stands at 33 games.

Also, the Highlands junior varsity (JV) team shut out the Boone County JV team 32-0 on Saturday, September 18 at 10:00AM. The game was played at Highlands. In addition, the Highlands freshman team hammered the Cooper freshman squad 50-0 on Wednesday, September 15 at 6:00PM, at Cooper.

Bluebirds Hold Off Cincinnati Withrow

2010 Week Four: Highlands 34 Cincinnati Withrow 27

Fort Thomas Highlands received is biggest challenge up to this point in the season, defeating Cincinnati Withrow 34-27 to conclude a four-week stretch of home games. Because of Withrow's athleticism and speed in the defensive secondary, the 'Birds abandoned the passing game and successfully attacked the Ohio Division I Tigers on the ground, amassing 354 rushing yards in the contest. Quarterback Patrick Towles, while only completing one pass in the game, ran for 172 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He was joined in the offensive backfield by running backs Jordan Streeter and Jake True, who racked up 103 yards and 75 yards, respectively; True also scored a rushing touchdown in the game.

The top-ranked Kentucky Class 5A Bluebirds had to contend with Withrow's agile quarterback, who was able to create opportunities for himself and throw for 352 yards against a talented Highlands secondary led by defensive back Austin Abner, who made a key interception against the Tigers. Highlands was leading 34-14 in the fourth quarter but Withrow put up the game's final 13 points to narrow the margin of victory. Cincinnati Withrow entered the game with a record of 0-2 for the 2010 season. Last year, Highlands defeated Cincinnati Withrow 21-0. Of note, Coach Dale Mueller had previously been the head coach for Cincinnati Withrow and coached current Withrow head coach Doc Gamble when Gamble played for the Tigers.

With the win, Highlands' current win streak stands at 32 games.

Highlands Sits Atop First Statewide Ratings

The first Dave Cantrall's Ratings have been released for the 2010 Kentucky prep football season, and Class 5A Highlands is tied for first place with Class 6A Louisville Trinity. The Dave Cantrall Ratings are published in the Lexington Herald-Leader and rank Kentucky high school football teams regardless of classification.

Bluebirds Move to 3-0

2010 Week Three: Highlands 50 Beechwood 24

Fort Thomas Highlands, ranked 21st nationally in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, moved to 3-0 on the 2010 season after defeating Class 1A power Beechwood 50-24. The host Bluebirds jumped out to a 36-0 lead early in the second quarter on account of some big plays on offense, defense and special teams. Highlands took a 43-10 lead going into halftime. Class 5A Highlands focused on the passing game, as quarterback Patrick Towles finished the contest with 288 passing yards, five touchdown passes and no interceptions. Wide receivers Brian Gall and Daniel Gold amassed 184 and 94 receiving yards, respectively; Gall hauled in three touchdown passes, Gold registered one score and tight end Ian McGurn caught a touchdown pass from Towles.

During the first quarter, linebacker Ethan Bishop made a big special teams play, recovering a fumble for a Bluebirds touchdown. Also in the first period, defensive back Ty Seidl returned a fumble 27 yards for a score. The Bluebirds played several reserves for a large portion of the game, allowing Beechwood to narrow the scoring margin in the second half. The Beechwood Tigers dropped to 0-2 on the season with this loss to Highlands. Highlands has a 5-0 record all-time against Beechwood. With the win, Highlands' win streak stands at 31 games.

On Thursday, September 2 at 6:00PM, the Highlands freshman team defeated the Campbell County freshman team 50-22. The game was played at Highlands. Also, the Highlands junior varsity (JV) team defeated the Conner JV squad 39-14. This game was played on Saturday, September 4 at 10:00AM, at Conner.

MaxPreps Takes Note of Highlands' Early Successes in 2010

Fort Thomas Highlands (2-0) is ranked 21st in the nation, according to the current MaxPreps Freeman Rankings. The Bluebirds, who host Beechwood on Friday, September 3, are the highest-ranked Kentucky team on the list. This marks the first time this season Highlands has been nationally ranked. The 'Birds finished the 2009 season ranked as high as third in the nation.

Highlands Shuts Down Ryle

Fort Thomas Highlands defeated Ryle 29-14 to maintain its dominant position in Northern Kentucky prep football. The Class 6A Raiders, who blasted Covington Catholic 61-7 the previous week, were viewed by many as Highlands' biggest roadblock to a perfect 10-0 regular season in 2010. Led by running back Travis Elliott and quarterback Conner Hempel, Ryle held a 14-13 advantage at halftime. However, Ryle fumbled the ball early in the third quarter and the Bluebirds capitalized, as running back Corey Compton scored a rushing touchdown from five yards out to re-take the lead for good. Compton rushed for 96 yards and two scores in the contest. Running back Jordan Streeter led all Highlands rushers with 104 yards on 11 carries. Just before halftime, quarterback Patrick Towles connected with wide receiver Daniel Gold on a 32-yard touchdown pass to provide the 'Birds with momentum just before the break. Towles finished the game with 151 passing yards. Highlands' defense made some adjustments to attack Ryle's potent running game, resulting in the Raiders being shut out in the second half. Ryle gained only one first down and 55 yards of offense in the entire second half. Defensive back Drake Bruns intercepted a Ryle pass and recovered a fumble in the game.

This victory extended Highlands' current win streak to 30 games.

The Highlands junior varsity (JV) team defeated the Ryle JV team 46-7 to open up the JV season. The game was played on Saturday, August 28 at 10:00AM, at Ryle. The Highlands freshman squad also opened up its season on Saturday, August 28. The Highlands freshman team defeated the Louisville Saint Xavier freshman squad 24-19; the game was played at Highlands at 7:30PM.

Northern Kentucky's Best Square Off

Fort Thomas Highlands, ranked first in the current Northern Kentucky prep football poll, hosts Class 6A Ryle this Friday. Ryle is ranked second in the Northern Kentucky prep football poll. The Raiders have returned a lot of talent and experience from last year's squad that finished 2009 with an 8-4 record; two of Ryle's four 2009 losses came against Highlands. Ryle (1-0), led by quarterback Conner Hempel and running back Travis Elliott, punished Covington Catholic 61-7 in the first week of the 2010 season. Class 5A Highlands (1-0) defeated Class 6A Louisville DuPont Manual 45-14 in the first week of play.

Last season, Highlands and Ryle played each other twice, with the Bluebirds winning both contests by scores of 37-14 and 31-14. The two programs play each other twice again this season; the second game of the series, played at Ryle, is scheduled for the last week of the 2010 regular season and will be televised live on Fox Sports Ohio. Highlands is 8-1 all-time against Ryle.

The game will be held at Highlands High School of Friday, August 27 at 7:30PM.

In addition to the varsity action, the Highlands junior varsity (JV) team will play the Ryle JV team on Saturday, August 28 at 10:00AM; the game will be held at Ryle. The Highlands freshman team will take of the Louisville Saint Xavier freshman team on Friday, August 28 at 7:30PM, at Highlands. These contests will be the first games of the 2010 season for both the Highlands JV and the Highlands freshman squads.

Highlands Continues Win Streak in 2010

Fort Thomas Highlands extended it current win streak to 29 games after blasting Class 6A Louisville DuPont Manual 45-14 in the season opener for both teams. The Class 5A Bluebirds attacked the Crimsons with a well-balanced offense, rushing for 286 yards and passing for 147 yards. Running back Corey Compton led the Bluebirds' rushing effort in the first half, gaining 64 yards on the ground and scoring three touchdowns. Running back Jordan Streeter matched Compton's yardage total, amassing 64 yards on 11 carries. Running back Colin Seidl rushed for 50 yards and one touchdown in the second half. Quarterback Patrick Towles completed 11 of his 20 passing attempts in the game. He finished the contest with 147 passing yards and one touchdown, a 20-yard connection to wide receiver Daniel Gold in the second quarter. Towles threw no interceptions in the game. Gold caught three passes for 45 yards and wide receiver Austin Sheehan hauled in three passes for 65 yards. In addition to making all of his extra point attempts, kicker Adam Weinel made a 30-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.

On defense, Highlands played a tremendous game, limiting Manual to 15 yards of offense in the first half. The Bluebirds' defensive linemen and linebackers penetrated Manual's offensive backfield throughout the game, recording several quarterback sacks. Defensive back Austin Abner made a key interception late in the first half, which set up a Highlands touchdown to extend the Bluebirds' lead to 28-0 at halftime. Also, defensive back Drake Bruns made an interception that he returned 50 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Highlands entered the game ranked first in Kentucky Class 5A in all the state's preseason ranking lists. Highlands was also ranked first in Northern Kentucky, regardless of football classification.

The Highlands junior varsity (JV) team was initially scheduled to play the Louisville DuPont Manual JV team on Saturday, August 21. However, this game was canceled by Manual.

Highlands Takes on DuPont Manual in Season Opener

Fort Thomas Highlands will host Louisville DuPont Manual in the opening game of the 2010 regular season. Overall, these two programs have played against each other only twice; Manual defeated Highlands 18-0 in 1937 and Highlands beat Manual 19-8 in 2009.

Class 5A Highlands finished the 2009 season with a 15-0 record and the Class 5A state title. Class 6A Manual finished the 2009 season with a 5-7 record, advancing to the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

The game will be played at Highlands on Friday, August 20 at 7:30PM.

The Highlands junior varsity (JV) and Highlands freshman teams do not begin their seasons until August 28.

Highlands Enters Season Ranked First

Fort Thomas Highlands enters the 2010 football season where it let off in 2009 - ranked first. Both the Louisville Courier-Journal and the Lexington Herald-Leader recently released their Kentucky high school football 2010 preseason coaches' polls and Highlands sits atop the Class 5A rankings in both lists.

Also, Jody Demling of the Louisville Courier-Journal has listed Highlands' quarterback, junior Patrick Towles, as one of the state's 25 best football prospects.

The 2010 football season officially kicks off for Highlands on Friday, August 20, when the Bluebirds host Class 6A Louisville DuPont Manual.

Trinity Beats Highlands in a Shootout

2010 Preseason Scrimmage: Highlands 42 Louisville Trinity 49

Kentucky's two prep football juggernauts squared off in the year's only preseason scrimmage for both teams. Class 6A Louisville Trinity defeated Class 5A Fort Thomas Highlands 49-42. The scrimmage was played under a regular-game format. The game, which was predicted by many to be a defensive struggle, became an offensive shootout. Trinity quickly advanced to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. Highlands, led by quarterback Patrick Towles, running back Corey Compton and wide receivers Daniel Gold and Austin Sheehan on offense, battled back to cut the Shamrocks' lead to seven points at halftime. The Bluebirds managed to tie the game at 35-35 in the third quarter following a Towles rushing touchdown. However, the 'Birds were never able to take the lead and Trinity's defense stopped a Highlands drive late in the game to preserve a 49-42 victory.

This scrimmage was part of the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association's 2010 Tom Potter Classic.

Bruns, Abner and Weinel Receive Preseason Recognition

TriStateFootball.com just released its 2010 Preseason All-TriStateFootball.com Team, and three Highlands players have been recognized. Junior defensive back Drake Bruns has been listed as a First Team player, while senior defensive back Austin Abner and senior kicker Adam Weinel have been listed as Honorable Mention.

This recognition is especially noteworthy, given that players from all over Southwest Ohio (including Cincinnati), Northern Kentucky and Eastern Indiana were considered for this preseason team.

Highlands Set to Host Trinity in Preseason Scrimmage

The Fort Thomas Highlands Bluebirds will host the Louisville Trinity Shamrocks this Friday at Highlands' David Cecil Memorial Stadium. This contest marks the only preseason scrimmage for both teams. These two programs, arguably the most storied in Kentucky, have won a state-record 19 state football titles. Also, both teams are considered major championship contenders this season, Highlands in Class 5A and Trinity in Class 6A. This preseason game will be the first-ever scrimmage between Highlands and Trinity, and the two programs have only played each other twice in the regular season; Trinity defeated Highlands 20-7 in 1969 and Highlands beat Trinity 42-29 in 2000. The scrimmage is to be played under a regular-game format and is part of the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association's 2010 Tom Potter Classic.

The scimmage will be played at Highlands on Friday, August 13 at 7:30PM.

Highlands to be Televised Live on Fox Sports Ohio

Fox Sports Ohio will be televising the October 28 Highlands varsity football game live, as part of its High School Football Game of the Week coverage. Fort Thomas Highlands will take on Ryle during the final game of the 2010 regular season. The contest will be played at 7:00PM at Ryle High School. This is the only game involving Northern Kentucky teams that is included in Fox Sports Ohio's television line-up, as all the other games feature Ohio prep teams. Highlands and Ryle clash twice this season; the first game, scheduled for August 27, will be played at Highlands.

Highlands Ranked by PrepNation

The PrepNation National Prep Football Poll has been released, in preparation for the start of the 2010 season. Fort Thomas Highlands is ranked 19th in the Midwest Region. Class 5A Highlands is the second-highest ranked Kentucky team in this poll, behind Class 6A Louisville Saint Xavier.

7-on-7 Competitions Underway

This past week, Fort Thomas Highlands participated in three separate 7-on-7 passing competitions, in preparation for the upcoming season. The 'Birds hosted Beechwood, Cincinnati Anderson and Mason County. Starting quarterback Patrick Towles picked up where he left off last season, after he took over for Will Bardo following Bardo's elbow injury during the Cincinnati Saint Xavier game. Highlands will resume these passing competitions next week, when they host Cincinnati Moeller, Simon Kenton and Covington Holmes over the next two weeks.

Abner Receives Preseason Recognition

Highlands defensive back Austin Abner has been named the Kentucky Class 5A, District 5 'Preseason Player of the Year,' according to The Cats' Pause 2010 High School Preview. Abner, a rising senior, started in the defensive backfield for the Bluebirds in 2009. Highlands defensive back Drake Bruns, offensive lineman Ryan Hahn, running back Jordan Streeter and quarterback Patrick Towles were listed as district 'Players to Watch' in 2010.

The preview magazine lists Fort Thomas Highlands as the Kentucky Class 5A, District 5 'Preseason Favorite,' followed by Covington Catholic, Dixie Heights and Scott.

'Birds Seniors Help Lead the Way in All-Star Win

On Saturday, June 10 at 7:00PM, the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches All-Star Game was played at Dixie Heights High School. The East squad defeated the West squad 16-10. Highlands had five seniors participate in the event, offensive lineman Hunter Schlosser, tight end Kyle Welz, and defensive linemen Cameron Dierig, Mark Snyder and Justin Johnson. The Highlands representatives played for the winning East squad. Hunter Schlosser was named an East squad offensive lineman MVP and Kyle Welz was named an East squad offensive back MVP.

Five Highlands seniors have accepted invitations to play in the 2010 Northern Kentucky Football Coaches All-Star Game. Offensive lineman Hunter Schlosser, defensive lineman Cameron Dierig, tight end Kyle Welz, defensive lineman Justin Johnson and defensive lineman Mark Snyder will be representing the Bluebirds on the East squad. The game will be played at Dixie Heights High School on Thursday, June 10 at 7:00PM. Highlands senior Nick Buten recently committed to play football for NCAA Division III Centre College, located in Danville, Kentucky. Buten started at wide receiver for the 'Birds, and led the team in receptions, receiving touchdowns and receiving yardage in 2009.

Fort Thomas Highlands senior Cameron Dierig has committed to play football at the College of Mount St. Joseph. The College of Mount St. Joseph, located in Cincinnati, Ohio, is an NCAA Division III school. Dierig was a starter on the defensive line during his senior season. He helped lead the 'Birds to a 15-0 record and state championship.

Highlands senior offensive linemen Hunter Schlosser and Tyler Combs both recently committed to play football at the collegiate level. Schlosser has committed to play for NCAA Division III Centre College, located in Danville, Kentucky. Schlosser and Combs were starters on Highlands' offensive line in 2009. They helped lead the way to a perfect 15-0 state championship season for the 'Birds.

Highlands Contests Previous KHSAA Sanctions

The Fort Thomas Board of Education has submitted a letter to the Kentucky Board of Education formally challenging the Kentucky High School Athletic Association's 2005 ruling, which led to the following sanctions on Highlands: a fine of $1500, the forfeiture of 12 wins from the 2004 season, a three-year probation period, and a two-scrimmage/ two-game suspension of Coach Mueller.

The sanctions stemmed from questions regarding the eligibility of Michael Mitchell, a player who transferred to Highlands for the 2004-2005 academic year. Despite being ruled eligible to play sports for Highlands by the courts, the KHSAA imposed penalties on the school for allowing Mitchell to play.

The Bluebirds won the 2004 Kentucky Class AAA state championship. The team went 14-1 on the field, but had its record changed to 2-13 following the KHSAA's sanctions. Because Mitchell did not play in the state title game, the KHSAA maintained Highlands' 2004 state championship.

Bardo Latest 'Bird to be Offered

Highlands senior Will Bardo has received an offer to play football for the United States Air Force Academy, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Bardo began the 2009 football season as the team's starting quarterback; however, he was switched to running back and return specialist during the season after sustaining an elbow injury. Bardo is the fourth Highlands football player to be made an NCAA FBS (formerly Division I-A) offer for the upcoming season.

Mueller Named National Coach of the Year

Highlands coach Dale Mueller was recently announced as the recipient of the National High School Coach of the Year Award (also known as the Yoast Award). The announcement was made during the US Army All-American Awards Dinner held in San Antonio, Texas, on January 8, 2010, and Coach Mueller formally received this award during halftime of the US Army All-American Bowl, which was televised live nationally on NBC the following day.

The Awards Dinner, presented by the Rotary Club of San Antonio, is the nation's largest prep football awards event. The coaching award is named after coach Bill Yoast, who was portrayed in the movie "Remember the Titans."

Coach Mueller is the first Kentucky coach to win this prestigious award.

Fort Thomas Highlands, ranked 6th nationally in the USA Today Super 25, defeated John Hardin 35-7 to win the Class 5A state title for the third consecutive year. Running back Austin Collinsworth spearheaded Highlands' offensive attack, rushing 25 times for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns, all in the first half. The Bluebirds led the Bulldogs 21-0 at the break. Running back Will Bardo returned the second-half kickoff 98 yards to extend the lead to 28-0, and quarterback Patrick Towles rushed for an 11-yard score to give the 'Birds a commanding 5-touchdown lead at 35-0. John Hardin registered a touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring at 35-7. Highlands attempted only 2 passes the entire game, with 1 completion from Towles to wide receiver Nick Buten. Collinsworth was named the game's Most Valuable Player.

Both teams entered the title game with matching 14-0 records. The championship game marked the first-ever football game between these 2 programs. The win gives Highlands a record-tying 19 official state football championships (tied with Louisville Trinity), to go along with 3 "mythical" state titles prior to the institution of state title games in 1959. With this win, Highlands coach Dale Mueller has 8 football championships, tied with former Beechwood coach Mike Yeagle for the most in Kentucky prep football history.

Fort Thomas Highlands dominated the Pulaski County Maroons 52-12 to lock up a spot in the 2009 Kentucky Class 5A championship game. Pulaski County entered the contest with a record of 10-3. Highlands' offense exploded in the first half, scoring touchdowns on every possession to take a 42-0 halftime lead. Running back Austin Collinsworth scored on a 60-yard run to spark the Bluebirds. He finished the game with 127 rushing yards on just 7 carries. Quarterback Patrick Towles continued to play efficiently, completing 6 of 9 passing attempts for 181 yards and a 34-yard passing touchdown to wide receiver Nick Buten. Buten finished the game with 101 receiving yards. Wide receiver John Drennen caught 2 passes for 78 yards. Most of the second half was played with a running clock, due to Highlands being up 45-0 early in the third quarter after a 26-yard field goal by kicker Adam Weinel. Running backs Will Bardo and Tyler Fennell each ran for 2 touchdowns in the first half. Highlands played their reserve players for most of the second half.

Next week, Highlands will play John Hardin in the Kentucky Class 5A State Championship. John Hardin defeated Bowling Green 28-21 to advance to the state title game. The Bulldogs have a record of 14-0. Highlands and John Hardin have never met on the football field, and this marks John Hardin's first-ever trip to the state final game.

This broadcasting service is being provided by Highlands Local Sports Radio, which is affiliated with Highlands High School. Highlands alumni Brad Fennell and Greg Gadd will be calling this Friday's Kentucky Class 5A State Semifinal against Pulaski County. The broadcast will begin at approximately 7:20PM on Friday, November 27, with the playoff game scheduled to commence at 7:30PM.

Fort Thomas Highlands doubled up the Johnson Central Golden Eagles 42-21 in the third week of the state playoffs. Running back Austin Collinsworth scored a 62-yard rushing touchdown on the Bluebirds' second play from scrimmage to give the home team a 7-0 lead. The game went back and forth for the entire first half, with Collinsworth punching in a score shortly before halftime to give Highlands a 21-14 lead at the break.

The 'Birds opened the game up in the third quarter, as Collinsworth and running back Tyler Fennell each scored a rushing touchdown to widen the scoring gap to 35-14. Quarterback Patrick Towles (who completed 4 of his 6 passing attempts for 91 yards and no interceptions) ran 13 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles added a score near the end of the game to make the final score 42-21. Collinsworth led all Highlands rushers with 159 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wide receiver John Drennen led all Highlands receivers with 93 yards. Johnson Central entered the game with a record of 8-4 in 2009; they had won 8 straight games before losing to Highlands. This game was a rematch of last year's regional final game, which Highlands won en route to a state title.

Next week, Fort Thomas Highlands hosts Pulaski County in the state semifinal game. Pulaski County defeated Letcher County Central 31-14 in their regional final game. The Maroons enter the semifinal game against Highlands with an overall record of 10-3. These two programs have never met on the gridiron.

Fort Thomas Highlands hosted Dixie Heights in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs, and routed the visiting Colonels 49-0. Multi-purpose specialist Will Bardo set the tone for the game, returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Running back Austin Collinsworth returned to action after missing the past few weeks with an injury; he rushed for 77 yards on 11 carries, registering a touchdown for the 'Birds. Running back Tyler Fennell was the leading rusher for Highlands. He amassed 87 yards and a rushing touchdown. Quarterback Patrick Towles completed 50% of his passing attempts in the contest, throwing for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns; both touchdown passes were to wide receiver John Drennen.

Highlands led 36-0 at halftime. Highlands' defense pitched a shutout for the second time this year. Highlands allowed only 172 yards of offense, while gaining 489 yards of total offense in the game. Dixie Heights entered the game with a record of 5-6 in 2009.

On Friday, November 20 at 7:30PM, Highlands will play Johnson Central in the Kentucky Class 5A Regional Final. The game will be played at Highlands. Johnson Central has a 2009 record of 8-4. They advanced to the third round of the state playoffs after beating Covington Catholic 51-32. The Golden Eagles currently have an 8-game winning streak heading into this playoff contest. This game is a rematch of last year's regional final game, which Highlands won 35-21 at Johnson Central en route to a state championship.

Fort Thomas Highlands rolled over Montgomery County 60-13 in the opening round of the Class 5A state playoffs. Running back Tyler Fennell led Highlands with 70 rushing yards on only 7 carries; he scored 2 touchdowns in the game. Running back Jake True also rushed for 2 scores. Multi-purpose specialist Will Bardo caught a touchdown pass and ran for 2 scores in the contest. Wide receiver Daniel Gold hauled in a 26-yard touchdown pass. Quarterback Patrick Towles completed 6 of his 12 passing attempts for 133 yards and a touchdown pass, to go along with his 60 rushing yards.

On defense, defensive back Austin Sheehan scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery. Defensive back Jake Meyer and linebacker Josh Quillen each made an interception in the game.

The Bluebirds led 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and carried a 41-0 lead into the half. Montgomery County (coming into the game with a 3-7 record) registered their 2 scores in the fourth quarter. Highlands entered the game seeded first in their district, while Montgomery County was seeded fourth in their district.

Fort Thomas Highlands will host Dixie Heights in the second round of the Kentucky Class 5A playoffs. Dixie Heights (seeded third in their district) upset Ashland Paul Blazer 41-14 on the first round of the state playoffs to advance to the second round. The Bluebirds defeated the Colonels 52-9 during the regular season. Dixie Heights has an overall record of 5-6 in 2009. The game will be played at Highlands on Friday, November 13 at 7:00PM.

Highlands Finishes Regular Season Undefeated

Fort Thomas Highlands defeated Ryle 31-14 in the last game of the 2009 regular season. Highlands played Kentucky Class 6A Ryle twice this season, defeating the Raiders both times. Running back Tyler Fennell led the way on offense, amassing 203 rushing yards on 20 carries. Running back Jordan Streeter and multi-purpose athlete Will Bardo each had rushing touchdowns in the contest, as did starting quarterback Patrick Towles. Towles also had a touchdown pass to wide receiver Nick Buten, who led all Highlands receivers with 64 yards in the game. Kicker Adam Weinel connected on a 47-yard field goal just before halftime; the 'Birds led 17-0 at the end of the first half.

Highlands (10-0) will host Montgomery County (3-7) in the first round of the 2009 Kentucky Class 5A playoffs.

In addition, the Highlands freshman team won the 2009 northern Kentucky freshman large-school championship, defeating the Covington Catholic freshman team 14-8 in the title game. This game was played on Thursday, October 29 at 6:00PM at Highlands. The Highlands JV team lost to the Ryle JV team 49-43 to end the JV season. Senior Will Bardo, who was injured in the Cincinnati Saint Xavier game, returned to action as a return specialist and running back. He accounted for 71 rushing yards and 2 rushing touchdowns, to go along with a 50-yard kick return. Running back Jordan Streeter amassed 73 yards and running back Tyler Fennell rushed for 53 yards in the contest. He was honored with this distinction following his performance against rival Covington Catholic this past weekend. In that contest, Collinsworth amassed 229 net rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 26 carries, despite playing with a hand injury. Fort Thomas Highlands is currently ranked 8th nationally in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, a computerized ranking system.

Fresh off their bye week, Fort Thomas Highlands traveled to archrival Covington Catholic and handed the Colonels their first district loss of the season. Overcoming some early turnovers, the Highlands running game got in gear, as running back Austin Collinsworth amassed 229 rushing yards in the game, a career best for him. Collinsworth scored 2 touchdowns and running back Tyler Fennell punched in 2 scores on the ground, with touchdowns of 2 yards and 13 yards. Running back Jordan Streeter rushed for 77 yards in the contest. Quarterback Patrick Towles, in his second varsity start, passed for 142 yards in addition to scoring on a 31-yard run. Wide receiver John Drennen caught 4 passes for 91 yards.

Highlands' defense did not surrender a point in the game, as Covington Catholic's only score came as a result of a fumble recovery that was returned for a touchdown in the first quarter. Covington Catholic only had 71 yards of offense in the game, while Highlands had 478 yards of offense in the contest.

In addition, the Highlands JV squad defeated the Covington Catholic JV squad 20-14. The game was played at Highlands on Monday, October 19 at 7:00PM. The Highlands freshman team defeated the Dixie Heights freshman team 46-14. This game, played at Dixie Heights on Thursday, October 15 at 6:00PM, was the final game of the freshman regular season. The Highlands freshman team enters the two-round northern Kentucky large-school freshman playoffs next week as the top-seeded team in the east bracket.

Running back Austin Collinsworth rushed for 3 touchdowns, while sophomore quarterback Patrick Towles completed 11 of his 19 passing attempts and threw 3 touchdown passes in his first varsity football start. Towles started in place of quarterback Will Bardo, who was injured in last week's win over Cincinnati Saint Xavier. Wide receivers Nick Buten and John Drennen each caught a touchdown pass in the contest, and running back Jordan Streeter scored both a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in the game. Kicker Adam Weinel connected on a 21-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter.

Earlier in the week Highlands broke into the USA Today Super 25 national rankings; the Bluebirds entered the list ranked 23rd. The USA Today Super 25 is arguably the most prestigious national ranking list.

In addition, the Highlands JV squad lost to the Dixie Heights JV squad 36-28. The game was played at Dixie Heights on Saturday, October 3 at 10:00AM. The Bluebirds JV team entered the game undefeated on the season. The Highlands freshman team defeated the Conner freshman team 36-6. Fort Thomas Highlands hosted Cincinnati Saint Xavier in a match-up billed as the national game of the week by MaxPreps, Rivals High and ESPN Rise and did not disappoint the home crowd. The Bluebirds, ranked 18th nationally by MaxPreps, defeated the Bombers 12-7 at David Cecil Memorial Stadium to remain perfect for the season. Saint Xavier was undefeated heading into the showdown, having blown out defending Kentucky Class 6A champion Louisville Trinity the previous week.

Highlands entered the game, which was televised nationally on the CBS College Sports Network, as the decided underdog but set the tone early, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter after scoring a safety. The score remained 2-0 at halftime. In the third quarter, Highlands quarterback Will Bardo scored the team's only touchdown on a 4-yard run. Earlier in the drive, Bardo scampered 66 yards to move the 'Birds into the red zone. Bardo racked up 133 yards on the ground and 52 yards in the air; he was named the player of the game. Highlands kicker Adam Weinel made a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to round out the scoring for the Bluebirds.

The story of the game, however, was the play of Highlands' defense, spearheaded by linebacker Brandon Roller. The 'Birds kept the potent Bombers' offense out of the end zone until Saint Xavier registered their only score with just 27 seconds left in the game. Highlands' defense made 2 interceptions and recovered a fumble in the contest.

This game marks the first time in the storied history of the Highlands football program that the Bluebirds defeated the top-ranked team in the nation, as Cincinnati Saint Xavier was the top-ranked team in the country according to the Massey Ratings.

The Highlands JV and freshman teams did not play games this week. The Highlands-Campbell County freshman game, scheduled to be played at Campbell County on Thursday, September 24 at 6:00PM was canceled due to poor weather.

Two high school football powerhouses collide Friday, September 25 when Fort Thomas Highlands (5-0) hosts Cincinnati Saint Xavier (4-0) at 6:30PM. The game will be televised nationally on the CBS College Sports Network (airing at 8:00PM on Friday). This event is sold out, with a crowd of 5200 anticipated at David Cecil Memorial Stadium.

The defending Kentucky Class 5A champion Highlands Bluebirds enter the game with wins over Class 6A Louisville DuPont Manual, Class 6A Ryle, defending Class 1A champion Beechwood, Ohio Division I Cincinnati Withrow and Class 6A Boone County.

The Cincinnati Saint Xavier Bombers have wins over Ohio Division I Cincinnati Colerain, defending Indiana Class 4A champion Indianapolis Cathedral, Kentucky Class 6A Louisville Saint Xavier and defending Kentucky Class 6A champion Louisville Trinity.

Both teams have received a great deal of attention in the national polls. Currently, Highlands is ranked:

No Kentucky football program is ranked higher than Highlands in the national polls. In addition, Fort Thomas Highlands is presently the highest-ranked team in every statewide Class 5A poll and first in northern Kentucky, regardless of football classification.

After playing the first four games of the 2009 season on the road, the Fort Thomas Highlands Bluebirds hosted Kentucky Class 6A Boone County at David Cecil Memorial Stadium, defeating the Rebels 36-14. Highlands rested star running back/defensive back Austin Collinsworth, and continued to work on the passing game with great success. Quarterback Will Bardo completed 10 of his 22 passing attempts for 245 yards and 3 touchdowns. Wide receiver Nick Buten hauled in 3 passes, 2 of which were touchdowns, while receiver John Drennen caught a touchdown pass from Bardo. On the ground, the 'Birds were led by running backs Jordan Streeter and Tyler Fennell; both scored touchdowns in the contest. On defense, the Bluebirds came up with a big stop in the second quarter, shutting the Rebels down after Boone County drove to the 3-yard line. The Bluebirds led by a score of 36-7 at halftime.

Also, the Highlands JV squad defeated the Boone County JV team 33-13 to remain perfect in 2009. The game was held at Boone County on Saturday, September 19 at 10:00AM. The Highlands freshman team defeated the Covington Catholic freshman team 15-8 in overtime. The game was played at Highlands on Wednesday, September 16 at 6:00PM.

Highlands was led by running back Austin Collinsworth, who amassed 185 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 12 carries, while quarterback Will Bardo completed 6 of 10 passing attempts for 126 yards in the air, to go along with his 78 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. The game was a homecoming of sorts for Highlands coach Dale Mueller, as he began his head coaching career at Withrow.

Also, the Highlands JV team defeated the Cincinnati Withrow JV squad 40-12 to remain undefeated on the JV season. The game was played at Highlands on Saturday, September 12 at 10:00AM. The Highlands freshman team lost a close game to the Ryle freshman team, by the score of 20-13. The contest was played at Ryle on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00PM.

Highlands Remains Perfect Against Beechwood

Two defending state champions faced off at Beechwood in week three, as Fort Thomas Highlands defeated Beechwood 48-20 to stay undefeated in 2009. Highlands' offense focused on the passing game, with quarterback Will Bardo completing 15 of his 25 passing attempts for 295 yards and 3 touchdown passes. Wide receiver Nick Buten was on the receiving end of 7 passes for 165 yards; he scored 2 touchdowns in the contest. Running back Tyler Fennell rushed for a score and also caught a touchdown pass. Running back Austin Collinsworth added 2 rushing touchdowns (of 10 and 71 yards), while back-up running back Josh Quillen scored a fourth-quarter rushing touchdown of 9 yards.

The Bluebirds were paid a special visit by University of Kentucky head football coach Rich Brooks, who arrived by helicopter to watch Austin Collinsworth (who has been offered a football scholarship by UK).

This win moves Highlands to 5-0 all-time against northern Kentucky powerhouse Beechwood.

Also, the Highlands JV team easily handled the Beechwood JV team 62-7 to improve to 2-0 on the season. The game was played at Highlands on Saturday, September 5 at 10:00AM.

The Highlands freshman team defeated the Boone County freshman team 54-32 on Thursday, September 3 at 6:00PM. The game was held at Highlands. This was the first win of the season for the Highlands freshman squad.

Running back Austin Collinsworth led the ground attack with 124 yards rushing on 13 carries. He scored 4 touchdowns in the contest. Kicker Adam Weinel connected on a 31-yard field goal to round out the scoring for Highlands. On defense, linebacker Colin Rosenhagen and defensive back David Hogue each made an interception, and defensive lineman Brian Beck recovered a fumble. Both Highlands and Ryle entered the game with 1-0 varsity records.

The Highlands JV team hosted the Ryle JV team at Highlands for the first JV game of the 2009 season; the Highlands JV team won 37-21. The Highlands freshman squad lost to the Louisville Saint Xavier freshman squad 27-26 in the freshman team's opening game. The Highlands freshman team attempted a game-winning 2-point conversion late in the contest, which was unsuccessful.

Defending Kentucky Class 5A champion Fort Thomas Highlands traveled to Louisville and defeated Class 6A Louisville DuPont Manual 19-8 in the first week of football action. On offense, running back Austin Collinsworth amassed 66 yards rushing on 14 carries. Collinsworth scored Highlands' first 2 touchdowns of the game, giving the 'Birds a 13-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Highlands extended the lead to 19-0 after running back Tyler Fennell ran for a score. The touchdown run was set up by a 48-yard pass from quarterback Will Bardo (who was starting his first varsity game for the Bluebirds) to wide receiver Nick Buten. Manual scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the score 19-8 in Highlands' favor; the Bluebirds' defense did not give up any more points in the contest. Highlands outgained Manual in total yardage by a count of 247 yards to 209 yards.

The Highlands junior varsity (JV) and freshman teams do not begin their seasons until next week.

The Louisville Courier-Journal's coaches poll has ranked Highlands first in Kentucky Class 5A heading into the regular season. Highlands Defeats Male in Preseason Scrimmage Action

Fort Thomas Highlands defeated Kentucky Class 6A power Louisville Male in the Bluebirds' only 2009 preseason scrimmage. The scrimmage was played in a game format. Highlands got out to a 43-14 halftime advantage and was leading the Male Bulldogs 50-14 in the fourth quarter, before Male narrowed the margin late in the game, against mostly Highlands' back-up players. Austin Collinsworth and Tyler Fennell carried the ball well for the 'Birds, and quarterback Will Bardo played with poise and composure; he threw the ball with great accuracy in the scrimmage. The defense, led by linebacker Brandon Roller, was solid against Male's speed. This scrimmage was played as part of the 2009 Tom Potter Classic.

Highlands to Participate in the Tom Potter Classic

Fort Thomas Highlands is scheduled to participate in the 2009 Tom Potter Classic, a series of preseason scrimmages organized by the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association (NKFCA). The 2009 Tom Potter Classic will involve 14 scrimmages held over a two-week period of time, prior to the start of the 2009 football season in Kentucky. As a part of this event, Highlands will host Kentucky Class 6A Louisville Male on Friday, August 14 at 7:00PM. The event is named in honor of the late Tom Potter, who was an assistant football coach at Newport Central Catholic in addition to executive director of the NKFCA.

Coach Mueller Wins Award

Coach Dale Mueller was recently named the recipient of the Paul Brown Excellence in Coaching Award for the 2008 football season. This award is given by the Cincinnati Bengals, and is bestowed annually to the Greater Cincinnati area's top prep football coach. Mr. Mueller is the eighth recipient of this prestigious honor, and the first Kentucky coach to win the award. As a result of winning this award, the Highlands High School athletic department will receive a $5000 donation from the Bengals.

Also, WR/RB/DB Austin Collinsworth is listed as the district's preseason player of the year. Highlands Receives Early Recognition from PrepNation

PrepNation has recently released a list of preseason state rankings, and Class 5A Fort Thomas Highlands is ranked second in the entire state of Kentucky, behind Class 6A Louisville Saint Xavier and ahead of Class 6A Louisville Trinity (who is ranked third).

Tyler Grubbs Commits

Highlands offensive lineman Tyler Grubbs has committed to NCAA FBS (formerly Division I-A) Miami University (Ohio). He is the first Highlands football player from the Class of 2010 to verbally accept a football scholarship. Grubbs also had football scholarship offers from Western Kentucky University, Troy University and Central Michigan University.

In addition to Grubbs, multipurpose player Austin Collinsworth has received football scholarship offers from the University of Kentucky, Stanford University, the University of Louisville, the University of Cincinnati and Vanderbilt University.

Other Highlands players are also expected to receive football scholarships during the upcoming football season.

7-on-7 Competitions

Fort Thomas Highlands will participate in 7-on-7 passing competitions against Simon Kenton, Mason County, Cincinnati Moeller, Covington Holmes, Cincinnati Taft, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy and Hamilton (Ohio) this summer, in preparation for the 2009 football season. These competitions will be held in June and July at Highlands High School.

Northern Kentucky All-Star Game

On Monday, June 1 at 7:00PM, the 2009 Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association East-West All-Star Game was held at Ryle High School. Five Highlands seniors, Tony Guidugli, Nick Martin, Adam Dempsey, Michael Laber and Oliver Head played on the East squad.

The East squad defeated the West squad by a score of 6-0. The game's sole score was a 35-yard touchdown pass from Highlands' Tony Guidugli to Newport Central Catholic's Mark Kelly in the third quarter. Guidugli led all players in rushing yards, in addition to leading the East squad in passing yards. He was named the East squad's Offensive Back of the Game.

This was the 27th all-star game held by the Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association.

Highlands Ranked by MaxPreps

Fort Thomas Highlands is ranked 24th nationally in the 2009 MaxPreps Football Xcellent 25 Early Contenders list. Highlands is the only Kentucky school listed in this prestigious preseason national ranking.

Highlands' Cannon Retired

The Highlands cannon, affectionately known as "Olde Betsy," has been retired. The 800-pound cannon has been fired during Highlands home football games since 1968. This decision was made in large part because of an injury sustained to a member of the cannon crew on the day of the 2008 Kentucky Class 5A state championship game, which Highlands won.

Former Highlands Coach Honored

On May 9, 2009, Mr. Homer Rice, former head football coach at Highlands High School, was honored as Alumnus of the Year by the Highlands High School Alumni Association. Coach Rice was inducted into the Kentucky High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame in 1988, the first year the program was installed.

Four Highlands Seniors Invited to All-Star Game

Dempsey Set to Become a Bearcat

Adam Dempsey will walk on at the University of Cincinnati for the 2009 season. Dempsey helped lead the Bluebirds to the 2008 Kentucky Class 5A championship in football his senior year, playing both offensive lineman and defensive lineman.

Mitchell Selected in Second Round of the NFL Draft

Former Highlands great Michael Mitchell was selected in the second round of the 2009 National Football League (NFL) draft by the Oakland Raiders on April 25. The Raiders selected Mitchell with the 15th pick of the second round (47th pick overall). Mitchell, who starred on Highlands' 2004 state championship team his senior year, played safety for Ohio University.

Two Highlands Alumni Preparing for the Upcoming NFL Draft

Two Highlands High School alumni, Sean Sester (Highlands Class of 2004) and Mike Mitchell (Highlands Class of 2005) are preparing for the 2009 National Football League (NFL) draft, held on April 25-26. Sester played offensive tackle for Purdue University, while Mitchell played safety for Ohio University. Both were outstanding football players for the Bluebirds.

Highlands senior quarterback Tony Guidugli officially signed to play football with Georgia Military College on March 17. Georgia Military College is one of the top junior college football programs in the nation, and several GMC alumni have gone on to play in the National Football League (NFL).

Change Made to Highlands' 2009 Schedule

As a result of Covington Holmes moving down to Kentucky Class 4A for the 2009 season, an opening was created in Highlands' varsity schedule. The Covington Holmes game will be replaced with a game against Cincinnati Saint Xavier. The game will be played at Highlands on Friday, September 25. Cincinnati Saint Xavier won Ohio Division I state championships in 2005 and 2007, finishing the 2007 season ranked 1st nationally according to PrepNation.com. Last season, Saint Xavier struggled a bit, finishing with a record of 4-6 and missing the 2008 Ohio state playoffs.
